Concerning the
Pension Protection Act
(PPA)
Ladies and
Gentlemen:
We have learned
that the House will be holding no more votes
this week and that members have left for the
Thanksgiving holiday without taking action on
the pension relief bill. That doesn't mean this
will not be passed, just that it will not happen
this week: The Senate (which is still in
session) has taken steps to move the Worker,
Retiree and Employer Relief Act of 2008 to a
vote. If it passes it will be sent to the House
for action.
It appears the
House will return on December 8 to consider
relief for the auto industry, so they could vote
on a pension bill at that time. This could be
accomplished either as part of that bill, or
they could pass the Senate bill (which is
unlikely because of the provisions deemed
"offensive" by the House) or they could pass
their own "clean" bill without such language,
sending that to the Senate for their
consideration. The only thing that's certain is
that nothing will become law this week.
We should
consider this as an opportunity to speak with
Members while they are back home for the holiday
and continue to press for passage of the pension
legislation.
We will update
you on progress that occurs
Best regards,
Mark B. Landau
